What is the International standard for the swimming pool in the shallow area?
Q. Our pool was reconstructed recently and it seems that instead of shallow of 3feet we have a shallow of 2.75ft but on measuring it it was found to be below 2.5ft which is why our hand touches the floor on swimming freestyle in shallow. Just wondering that the international standard for shallow is. Also, any tips for improving buoyancy while swimming in such a situation?

A. What "international standard" are you referring to? Surely any international standard would not specify a distance in English units. According to FINA, competition pools should be at least 1 meter in depth, but 2 meters is preferred. Here is an excerpt from the FINA handbook: and a link to give depth suggestions for pools, but it is not a "standard": Now that your pool is in place, I suggest you learn a shallower pull -- not because you have a shallow pool, but because it is better stroke mechanics. If your hands are going down more than two feet, you are putting too much "up and down" motion in your stroke and you are wasting energy bobbing up and down in the water (although you may not perceive it). Do some drills where you draw… [cont.]

A. I think most people are hte same, to be honest. Don't feel so bad. I doubt that buying things is your innermost happiness, or makes your life whole. You're too deep of a person for that. And, yes, deep people are allowed to have new clothes.

What is the wavelength of this wave in shallow water?
Q. A wind blowing over the ocean generates a deep water wave with a period of 3 seconds. What is the wavelength (in meters) of this wave when it reaches shallow water? Show all work. The first person to get this question right earns ten points! I have the answer already. I'd just like to see people struggle and try to solve it. If you can, you get ten points!
Asked by Dynamic Fetch - Mon Mar 16 18:53:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Equations: In all situations: lambda = CT, where C = speed, lambda = wavelength, T = period Shallow water: d = lambda / 20, where d = depth, lambda = wavelength in deep water C = sqrt(gd), where g = acceleration of gravity = 9.8 m/s^2, d = depth Deep water: lambda = 1.56T^2, where lambda = wavelength, T = period Work: lambda = 1.56(3)^2 lambda = 14.04 d = 14.04/20 d = 0.702 C = sqrt(9.8 * 0.702) C = 2.62 lambda = 2.62 * 3 lambda = 7.87 The wavelength of the wave would be 7.87 meters.

Is it shallow to break up with your boyfriend due to their foot odor?
Q. My boyfriend has rancid foot odor. He refuses to see a doctor because he is too embarrassed about it. It smells like hot sewer scum! Am I being too shallow?
Asked by St. ChezG - Fri Apr 3 15:20:05 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should tell him that doctors are there to HELP, not to LAUGH at their patients. They know about these problems. Tell your boyfriend that if he truly does love you he will get this foot odor checked out, and if he doesn't, tell him that you don't really want to be around him (at least when his feet are exposed). Then again, if you really love him and you know you need him, then don't break up...after all it's better to have to breathe in a bad smell than be scarred emotionally and lose the one you wanted.

How do you create shallow depth of field with digital camera?
Q. I just got a FujiFilm s1500 digital camera and I'm having a hard time figuring out the manual controls. I really want to create a shallow depth of field in my pictures so the subject is in focus and the background is blurry but I can't figure it out and I've read over the manual several times. Can anyone help me O.o?
Asked by WickedLovely - Sat Dec 26 01:02:24 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depth of field depends on the Aperture. For a shallow depth of field you need a physically large aperture (which perversely is a low /f-number), for a deep depth of field you would use a physically small aperture (high /f-number). So, on your Fuji S1500 you just need to select "aperture priority" mode and use the smallest /f-number available. One thing to consider is that your camera does not have a constant aperture, so after you use the zoom, you may need to re-adjust the aperture setting. ** I like the post that suggests experimenting with depth of field, if you have the time I'd thoroughly suggest you give it a try!

Removing relatively long but shallow scratches from 05 Camry plastic bumper?
Q. I've got a couple of long, but shallow scratches in my back bumper bar of an 05 Camry. Any suggestions of how I can easily remove these or make them less obvious? I've heard rubbing it with baking soda or something like Gumption may work. Anyone tried this?
Asked by arod - Sat Mar 29 09:34:54 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Baking soda isn't going to do anything except make a mess. Just take it to a body shop and have them look at it. If it is light enough, then they will polish it out and probably won't charge you but a few dollars. If you can feel the scratches with your fingernail then they cannot be polished and the bumper must be painted.

A. All kinds of beans should do well -- peas, too. They make their own nitrogen in symbiosis with bacteria, but they grow even better if you use a mixture of urine and water, for example. I've gotten plants with leaves almost 10 inches wide.

Why doesn't the Richter scale work well for shallow earthquakes?
Q. We've been told that there are a number of flaws to the Richter scale (ML), the limitations of the original instrumentation, that it was only designed for use in California and that shallow earthquakes are a practical problem. Can you explain why this should be? Reading it back, maybe the point is it only works for shallow earthquakes?!
Asked by jonno1805 - Wed May 5 06:43:55 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Charles Richter developed the scale in the 1930s to measure shallow earthquakes in California. These early measurements of magnitude simply relied on using two factors (the difference in P- and S-wave arrival times and Swave amplitude). The measured earthquakes were less than 600 km (375 miles) from the seismograph stations and occurred at similar depths in the crust. More complex formulae to determine magnitude from seismic body waves or surface waves were developed as the number of seismograph stations increased and it was recognized that earthquakes occurred at a range of depths.

Why is the shallow end of my pond mossy?
Q. I'm in Florida, the pond is about 18 inches deep at the shallow end and about 3' deep at the other end with a waterfall. The entire pond gets lots of sun even though there is a large avacado tree over the shallow end. I purchased an upgraded filtration system when the pond was installed. The rocks on the floor of the shallow end are covered with a fuzzy green moss. I do have some plants in the water. What can I do to eliminate this?
Asked by sally c - Thu Aug 9 15:03:55 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Its algae, not moss. Algae needs nutrients and sun to grow and it doesn't like moving water so the waterfall is protecting the deep end. Try adding floating plants with large leaves to shade the water. There are also underwater "oxygenating" plants you can add that will shade the rocks and use up some the nutrients. Limit nutrients in the water by limiting the use of fish food and preventing fertilizer and soil runoff into the pond from nearby gardens or lawns. Finally barley straw, available at pond supply centres, produces a chemical as it decomposes that kills algae. It takes a bit of time to work. There are also algae killing chemicals you can add to the water, the dead algae can create a problems so chemicals should be a last… [cont.]

When is a person shallow when it comes to dating?
Q. Is it wrong for people to like curvy women or lean men? Is it wrong for women or men to not be attracted to people overweight? I've notice it doesn't seem shallow for say an unattractive person or overweight person to like the same curvy and lean men. But what is shallow to you? My question isn't to insult anyone, I do want honest answers on the topic though.

A. That is kind of a tricky issue, I just say people are shallow when they judge people based on appearances and preconceptions,if someone is not physically attracted to someone I cant necessarily call them shallow because there are plenty of women im not attracted to,however if I think a woman looks decent enough and I like their personality then I will sacrifice looks a little because what good is being in a relationship with an attractive person who I dont connect with or relate too.

I want to determine the permeability of a shallow hardpan and leaching of nutrient through it. How can I do?
Q. I am working on a project in which I try to estimate the subsurface lateral flow of water which occurs due to presence of a shallow hardpan in the soil profile at about one meter deep. But I want to determine how permeable the hardpan is an how much water percolates through it to meet the groundwater. Can I do it with the help of a tracer like potassium bromide? If I can how should I take samples and how can i proceed?

A. you may have to determine the hydraulic conductivity of the material above and below and through the hard pan to establish the permeability through the hard pan. Then i would sample the water on top and below the hard pan to determine if any leaching is occurring. By comparing the 2 areas you can find the differences between them and try to conclude the answers from your data. This sound like you doing an Honours project or something like that. I could write a whole scientific method for this prac but that would take ages, sorry. good luck

How are people supposed to live in a shallow society?
Q. first impressions are important and when people are shallow, they'll automatically judge and think negatively about an unattractive person. it just seems unfair that "unattractive" people have to work harder to prove themselves...
Asked by jen - Mon Nov 16 18:13:54 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I completely disagree with that! Who do you need to prove yourself to? You don't have to prove yourself to anyone except yourself. And if the society you are in is shallow, then I recommend you not to stay there for too long because it will drag you down to its level. You will become shallow too. Look at your question: you are already trying to make good impressions on shallow people :) So stick to your way of doing things. Stick to your own nature, and trust it. P.S. I think it is a blessing to be less attractive because it is much easier to find truly honest people in your life

Q. first impressions are important and when people are shallow, they'll automatically judge and think negatively about an unattractive person. it just seems unfair that "unattractive" people have to work harder to prove themselves...

What would be the way to characterize the shallow hardpan lying at soil profile at about 1m depth?
Q. I want to determine the characters and their spatial variability of a shallow impermeable hardpan( such as bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, permeability). How can I collect the samples, from a 10 acre area to perform this research?

A. You will need to take soil samples on a grid and at various depths. The density of the grid and number of sample depths will depend upon how much resolution you require in your final characterization. Density is found by weighing a sample of known volume and then calculating the density. Permeability can be found using a permeameter shown in link 1 below. Hydraulic conductivity is similar to and perhaps synonymous with permeability. Another important factor you may wish to consider is water retention, which can be measured using a tensiometer, see link 2

what is the cheapest way to keep a shallow pond from freezing entirely?
Q. I want to put a telescope and a black moore in a shallow pond together because if i put them in a big pond the big fish would kill them, but every winter the small pond freezes entirely. i dont want any thing that uses alot of electricity because it would be to expensive. what should i use???

A. How shallow? If it's at least 3 feet at it's deepest point, you don't need to keep it from freezing over. Very rarely will ponds completely freeze that deep in most states in the US, or those with a similar climate. Those areas that do, you can place a heavy plastic cover over, above the water surface. This will create an air insulation over the pond, and though it may freeze over, it shouldn't freeze through. It would of course need to be weighted down.
