Sumerian (ð’…´ð’‚  EME.ÄœIR15 "native tongue") was the language of ancient Sumer, spoken in southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) since at least the 4th millennium BCE. During the third millennium BCE, there developed a very intimate cultural symbiosis between the Sumerians and the Akkadians, which included widespread bilingualism. The influence of Sumerian on Akkadian (and vice versa) is evident in all areas, from lexical borrowing on a massive scale, to syntactic, morphological, and phonological convergence. This has prompted scholars to refer to Sumerian and Akkadian in the third millennium as a sprachbund.

Akkadian gradually replaced Sumerian as a spoken language somewhere around the turn of the 3rd and the 2nd millennium BCE (the exact dating being a matter of debate), but Sumerian continued to be used as a sacred, ceremonial, literary and scientific language in Mesopotamia until the first century CE. Then, it was forgotten until the 19th century, when Assyriologists began deciphering the cuneiform inscriptions and excavated tablets left by these speakers. Sumerian is a language isolate.

What is the oldest language that exists that you can learn fluently?
Q. If most of the ancient language has been saved somehow and you can learn it fluently. For instance Sumerian, or Ancient Egyptian, or any others like that.

A. I could grunt like the cavemen and fluently if I tried. Seriously, probably Latin. It's a basis for many romance languages and it still is taught in some schools.

A. Meroitic, which is an alphabetic script based loosely on a later Nubian adaptation of some Egyptian hieroglyphs used to write the Meroitic language which is either an isolate or in the Nilotic language family (there is still debate). We are actually able to distinguish names and which words are probably nouns and which are verbs, and the alphabetic characters are deciperable, but are unable to actually translate the language. Linear A - a script used in ancient Crete. Indus script Byblos and a few others...see the link below
